The High flexion or hi flex knee is a boon to patients seeking increased function after a TKR. It provides 155 degrees of bending. Thus it allows activities which require more flexibility which are not possible with conventional knee implants. These are squatting for activities like yoga, kneeling, offering Namaz (Muslim prayer), use of Indian toilet and gardening.. High flexion is achieved through a combination of prosthetic design, patient selection, surgical technique and special physiotherapy. We pioneered High flexion knee replacement in the city six years ago.
In order to benefit from a high flex knee replacement a few criteria should be met a) Osteoarthritis is the main indication. If it is rheumatoid arthritis, bony destruction should not be advanced. b) Revision knees are not suited for high flexion c) Ankylosed knees or fused knees cannot be replaced with a high flexion knee. d) The thigh calf index should be above 90 degrees. In other words, the patient should not be too obese. e) The patient should be motivated to achieve deep knee bending and should participate in aggressive post operative physiotherapy.
Some activities possible only with the full bending or high flex knee replacements are shown below.

Implants- Centre uses Zimmer Nexgen LPS flex, Nexgen LPS mobile bearing and Gender specific knees for High flexion routinely. On demand we use rotating platform PFC Sigma RPF knee, PFC fixed bearing knee from Johnson & Johnson, Genesis high flex knee from Smith & nephew & Triathlon & Scorpio knee from Stryker.
