Arthroscopic debridement of Septic arthritis

Causes-
Aspiration of knee under non aseptic conditions, infected total knee replacements, ACL reconstruction

Treatment
When septic arthritis is detected earlier in a patient and debridement is indicated then it can be done arthroscopically. The scope is inserted through the antero- lateral or anteromedial portals and a shaver is introduced into the suprapatellar pouch to break down soft adhesions. Multiple drains are left in situ and the patient is started on CPM(continuous passive mobilization). In Chennai, aspiration of the knee in ill equipped theatres by poorly trained surgeons/ gp's may lead to septic arthritis. Antibiotics are administered for prolonged period.
