Knee replacements in the elderly |
Medical problems in the elderly.
The elderly population in India is increasing in numbers like the west. With this the number of people requiring elective orthopaedic surgery for knee, shoulder, hip and spine problems has increased. The elderly people are on their own as their children are overseas. Medical problems like coronary heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure are common problems co existing.
They need to remain ambulant. Arthritis of the knees leads to loss of ambulation. Total knee replacements(TKR) can cure this condition. |

People in South India and Chennai are religious. They are used to sitting on the floor to eat. They kneel to pray to God. The majority of knee replacements done in India are not suited for them. |
| Special kind of knee replacement for those keen to get full knee bend |
I offer my patients a special kind of knee replacement which allows them to lead a normal life style. This knee allows full bending. The cost is the same as the other knee replacements. |
| Unicondylar knee replacement |
For octogenerians( people in their eighties), with minimal involvement and whose pain is not relieved by analgesics, arthroscopic treatment is an option to relieve mechanical symptoms. With partial knee wear, a partial( unicondylar) knee replacement provides pain relief, shorter recovery and near normal function. |
| Pain relief contributes to a better quality of life. |
With the pain gone, elderly can visit temples and places of worship, go for walks, travel outside and can give up their cooped up life. |
